15th August 2006 - It's been great weather for the last month, not as hot or humid as the summer but with temperatures around 30C it's as good as a northern hemisphere summer. There is also the advantage of lower prices compared to the high season from Christmas to Carnival. What are you waiting for? Come on down!!

19th July 2006 - Would have posted this earlier but have been travelling. The Brazilian airline Varig is bankrupt. Some flights are still operating while an attempt is made to sell the airline. Our advise is to avoid the airline like the plague until the situation is resolved.

19th July 2006 - We've added a page on the thriving "Swingers" scene in Rio. Plenty of clubs and singles are welcome on some nights.

10th March 2006 - The Brazilian currency continues to be very strong, exchange rate is around 2.16 to the dollar. Bring as much cash as you feel comfortable in carrying. You will get a few percentage points higher rate when changing cash in the cambios.

22nd February 2006 - Stones concert went off well, official figures put the beach crowd at 1.2 million. Next stop Carnival, kick off Friday night 24th, Parade starts 26th.

10th February 2006 - Carnival only 2 weeks away. If you haven't got accomodation yet you may have trouble. Worse case scenario you could stay at a Love Motel but as they are booked for 12 hour periods you'll be paying double. Also don't forget to get as much cash as you need from the ATMs. Towards the end of the Carnival period many of them will be empty. Enjoy!!!!!

1st January 2006 - Happy new year. This >> link<< has a good description of new years eve in Copacabana. If you missed it in 2005 then book up early for 2006. Brazilian girls love a party and outside of Carnival this is the biggest in Rio.

15th December 2005 - The Rolling Stones are planning a free concert on Copacabana beach on 18th February 2006 as part of their current world tour. Expected to be about 1.5 million people in attendance. Should be interesting!!

20th August 2005 - With a major political scandal ongoing in Brazil there are signs that the Brazilian currency - the Real is starting to devalue. It has been overvalued for some months. If it continues to devalue this can only be good news for visitors to the country.

1st April 2005 - Unfortunately this is no April fools joke - 25-30 people were shot dead in a drive by shooting in small towns just outside Rio. It appears the shootings may have been carried out by off duty police. It shouldn't put you off coming for a vacation as this is a long way from the vacation spots but it does no one any good to pretend Brazil is a tropical paradise, it IS a great place but it needs a lot of improvement before it can really live up to that image. 21st March 2005 - About 500,000 Brazilians converged on Copacabana beach for a free concert by U.S.star Lenny Kravit. Free shows are quite common on the beach although not usually with an International artist, but they are all great even so.

11th March, 2005 - The Dollar is getting stronger here in Brazil. after slipping to 2.55 to the Real it is now up to 2.7 and in the Cambios you can get a little more.

Feb. 24, 2005 - VARIG Brazilian Airlines, Latin America's largest airline and the anchor for Star Alliance in the region, announced today that it has re-introduced Boeing 777 service between New York's JFK Airport and Guarulhos Airport serving Sao Paulo. The daily flight continues to Rio de Janeiro. "VARIG has replaced its MD-11 service with the B-777 as it has acquired an additional Triple 7, now bringing the total fleet of this aircraft type to 4," Vicente Cervo, VARIG's Director-North America, said. "The market prefers the 777, thus we are delighted to be able to offer this aircraft to our customers," he noted.
