Avenida Atlantica  Copacabana, Sidewalk Bar-Restaurants

These bar/restaurants are good value for money - food is cheap and plentiful ( normally one serving is enough for 2 people ) Drink is cheap - Beer called Choppy ( draft) or Cerveja ( canned/bottled ) will cost around 2-3 reals, that's around a dollar. Rio de janeiro side walk cafeBelow are details of some of the more popular ones with the girls although you will meet them at any of these sidewalk bars. If you had to pick two only then check out Mab's ( near the Meridian hotel ) and Terraco Atlantico which is outside the Help disco ( itself a great spot). Mabs is very popular with disreputable fun loving young ladies and you are guaranteed to have a good time. Hopefully you can manage to get somethig to eat at the same time.

Another good one is the Balcony Bar, close to the Placa Lido square. At these open air bar restaurants you will get hawkers coming up a lot of the time trying to sell you their brick brack. They don't push it so it is not particularly bothersome but if you don't like being bothered at all then eat and drink inside or else try out the restaurants below.

Traditional Restaurants

One type of restaurant you don't want to miss is the Churrascarias ( Barbeques), also known as Rodízios. Here you can eat all the meat you want ( plus salad, vegetables etc ). Waiters continually come to your table with all sorts of charcoal grilled meats until you can eat no more. With drinks and deserts it shouldn't cost more than US$20-30 per head.
Particularly recommended is Porcão in Ipanema at Rua Barão da Torre, 218 and Marius in Copacabana at Avenida Atlantica, 290. Plus if you go to Barra then try Pampa Grill, highly recommended. Next to Carrefour Supermarket at the side of Barra Shopping Mall.

Churrascaria Jardim Rua República do Perú Copacabana
Churrascaria Palace Rua Rodolfo Dantas 16b Copacabana
Platafroma Rua Adalberto Ferreira, 32 Leblon
Esplanada Grill Rua Barão da Torre, 600 Ipanema

Don't forget to try the Brazilian national dish Feijoda - a black bean and pork stew. Nearly all restaurants serve it. Try some with your Churrasco.

Galetos

These places don't get a big mention in most guides to Brazil but they are cheap and great, if you like chicken. They serve entire, small delicious charcoal grilled chickens, cut up for you and served with salad, french fries and other side dishes. These are no fancy restaurants - you normally sit on stools around a central counter watching the chickens get cooked, and although you are given utensils the chickens are best eaten in your hands. Some of the better known ones are listed to the left.

Other Restaurants

There are numerous types of restaurants in Rio, particularly Copacabana and Ipanema. A few examples are listed to the right. If you like Italian try the La-Trattoria at 7-A Rua Fernando Mendes, close to the Excelsior hotel.
