These bar/restaurants are good value for money - food is cheap and plentiful ( normally one serving is enough for 2 people ) Drink is cheap - Beer called Choppy ( draft) or Cerveja ( canned/bottled ) will cost around 2-3 reals, that's around a dollar. Another good one is the Balcony Bar, close to the Placa Lido square. At these open air bar restaurants you will get hawkers coming up a lot of the time trying to sell you their brick brack.
One type of restaurant you don't want to miss is the Churrascarias ( Barbeques), also known as Rodízios. Here you can eat all the meat you want ( plus salad, vegetables etc ). Waiters continually come to your table with all sorts of charcoal grilled meats until you can eat no more. With drinks and deserts it shouldn't cost more than US$20-30 per head. Rincão do Tchê Rua Domingos Ferreira, 220 Copacabana Don't forget to try the Brazilian national dish Feijoda - a black bean and pork stew. Nearly all restaurants serve it. Try some with your Churrasco. These places don't get a big mention in most guides to Brazil but they are cheap and great, if you like chicken. They serve entire, small delicious charcoal grilled chickens, cut up for you and served with salad, french fries and other side dishes. These are no fancy restaurants - you normally sit on stools around a central counter watching the chickens get cooked, and although you are given utensils the chickens are best eaten in your hands. Some of the better known ones are listed to the left.
There are numerous types of restaurants in Rio, particularly Copacabana and Ipanema. A few examples are listed to the right. If you like Italian try the La-Trattoria at 7-A Rua Fernando Mendes, close to the Excelsior hotel.
